Games are fun, that's what makes them games! But they also teach important thinking skills, help develop spatial skills, and allow players to practice forming strategies.

The Native American Games kit is based on the classic 1902 Smithsonian monograph by Stewart Culin. Included in the kit are task cards and materials for 20 different toys and games of chance or skill from Native American groups.
If the group you're studying is not directly mentioned, information in the Teacher's Guide allows you to find a game or toy from a group related by language or region. Eight activities include enough materials for each child in a class of 30 to take the activity home. The other 12 activities include materials for groups of children to play.

This kit can be found in the New Mexico Social Studies Instructional Materials Catalog in SECTION 3, PAGE 26, SUBJECT NA.

  • All materials needed for each activity are in labeled bags and are packed in a large, resealable bag.
  • The Teacher’s Guide contains additional information about the games and toys as well as extensions, technical notes, and variations.
  • Each activity has clear instructions and information about the tribe.
  • Crayola Wet Set® clay for making “bone” dice!
  • This clay only gets hard when it’s soaked in water.
  • Kid’s Discover© Native Americans included for even more fun.
